COMM 478 - Media Marketing & Promotion
In the Fall 2025 semester, I completed COMM 478, which explores how different media forms are used for advertising and marketing purposes, examining direct marketing techniques and the increasing use of new media technologies for marketing. Through this course, I gained a better understanding of not only marketing tactics but also how to apply them by creating presentations for a non-profit organization of my choice, with which I worked throughout the entire semester. One of the first assignments for the course was to create a Client Situation Analysis, which discussed my non-profit organization, the LGBT Life Center. In this presentation, I was tasked with making my own PowerPoint branding for the organization, incorporating information about them, online reviews, conducting a STEEPLE analysis of macro-level pressures, and examining media channels to assess their online presence. Additionally, I created an infographic for the organization, which includes essential information for stakeholders and outlines how they can get involved.

Strategic Communication majors commonly take this course, so I entered it unsure of how I would perform, as I had not taken marketing courses before. At first, I had some difficulties, as there was a lot of terminology that I had to get used to in the course to effectively present my project to not only my professor, but also my peers, as we would be reviewing one another's. After I became more comfortable with the course and its content, I felt more confident in my ability to create a practical Client Situation Analysis.

Through this experience, I learned and understood the marketing side of Communication, something that is extremely important to know in the fields I can pursue. Having an understanding of marketing can also expand my career opportunities, as I could work in the gaming field in roles such as analytics, social media marketing, branding, and more. Similarly, my Media Studies major will also assist, as I have a good understanding of online media, including advertising, which I also learned more about in this course and through these projects.
